Acupuncture

As an alternative treatment method, acupuncture involves insertion of needles in certain bodily points to release energy blockages, restore normal circulation, treat certain conditions, and promote a balanced and healthier system. Although acupuncture is often associated with traditional Chinese medicine, this alternative treatment process is also extensively practised in Japan and other countries in Asia.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Modern practise involves initial consultation and diagnosis by the professional acupuncturist. Diagnosis includes an inspection of certain body parts such as the tongue, a breathing test, and other physical tests. The acupuncturist also checks pulse points for unusual changes in palpitation and rhythm. Inquiries on the client’s health history are also included in the diagnosis. The client may be asked about their diet and appetite, waste excretion frequency, sleeping patterns, and other questions.

After the initial diagnosis, treatment commences with identification of the appropriate meridian and acupuncture points. There are more than 400 acupuncture points located along the meridian lines of the body. Each meridian line corresponds to a particular body function or system.

In comparison with acupressure, the acupuncture process involves penetrating the points with needles to stimulate the desired effect or treatment. For sanitary and safety purposes, modern acupuncture therapy utilises needles made of stainless steel that are disposed or sterilized after usage to prevent contamination and transfer of diseases. Different needle lengths and sizes are used for specific parts of the body.

Benefits of Acupuncture

Acupuncture enthusiasts swear by its effectiveness in easing pain and treating certain symptoms and conditions. It is often used to reduce or eliminate various pain-related conditions affecting the head, neck, knees, back, including postoperative pain and discomfort. In addition, it is also an acceptable treatment for morning sickness, nausea, and vomiting.

As an alternative method, acupuncture focuses on the holistic and preventive aspect of treatment. A series of sessions with an acupuncturist could help facilitate a smoother flow of energy in the body and improve health. In comparison to modern treatment methods, acupuncture is natural and organic. Since acupuncture does not require ingestion of medicine, it is perceived to be a safer treatment method for individuals with allergic reactions to certain types of medicine.
